In agreement with habitats Directive, Common Agricultural Policy, European strategies and guidelines for forestry protection ad valorization, this policy and planning instrument, and the further forestry management strategies implemented at regional and local level in Italy, aim to pursue the main pillars of european forestry strategy, i.e. the protection of forests, in view of their carbon stocks, biodiversity and environmental benefits, the sustainable and competitive management of forestry products (included biomass growth and harvesting for energy purposes), the reduction of fire hazard and the maximization of benefits for rural communities. This plan leads to the implemantation of national forestry guidelines for a sustainable and competitive management of forests, that are implemented at regional level through regional forestry programmes; these guidelines and the further body of regional regulation include forestry management practices, rules for forest cutting (with potential use of wood for energy), plans for reforestation (including plantation of short rotation forestry).
