Description: 
The measure is carried out as a part of the Operational Programme for Strengthening of the Regional Development Resources (ERDF) 2007-2013, as a part of the Priority 1 (Competitive firms and research excellence). It supports joint R&D programmes, developed by strategic partnerships between industry and academia. Outputs are technological innovations/patents applicable for industrial use. Within the tender for the development of centers of excellence for the period 2009-2013, 8 centers of excellence were awarded support. These are (marked with * are those with pronounced bioeconomy character): 1) Centre of Excellence for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CO NIN), co-financing € 9,803,463.47 2) Center of Excellence for Biosensors, Instrumentation and Process Control (CO BIK), co-financing € 10,000,000.00 *3) Center of Excellence for integrated approaches in chemistry and biology of proteins (CO CIPKeBiP), co-financing € 8,407,000.00 *4) Centre of Excellence for Low-Carbon Technologies (CO NOT), co-financing € 9,989,739.00 5) Centre of Excellence for Advanced Non-metallic materials with the technologies of the future (CO NAMASTE), co-financing € 9,417,264.88 *6) Centre of Excellence for Polymer Materials and Technologies (CO PoliMaT), co-financing € 10,000,000.00 7) Centre of Excellence Space: Science and Technology (CO Space.si), co-financing € 9,966,506.00 *8) NMR center of excellence for research in biotechnology, pharmacy, and physics of substances (CO EN-FIST); co-financing € 9,970,013.00. The measure is planned to continue in the 2015-2020 period; allocated implementation details and budget are not known yet. Supported Centres of Excellence will not need to be the ones supported in the 2009-13 period.
Goal/Aim: 
The measure is intended to promote the concentration of knowledge in priority areas of technology and horizontal integration across the supply chain and chain of knowledge development/transfer. It is an integrated, multidisciplinary research and development program, with a pronounced horizontal objective of promoting the transition to energy-efficient and low greenhouse gas emissions, and the transition to a low-carbon society.
