Factsheet: Market premium

Market premium

Key Information
Description:
Instead of receiving the feed-in tariff for electricity from renewable sources, a plant operator may choose to sell his electricity directly, i.e. to a third party by a supply agreement or at the stock market, and claim the so-called market premium from the grid operator. The amount of the market premium shall be calculated each month. In general, plant operators are free to choose between the feed-in tariff and the market premium for direct selling. Biogas plants with an installed capacity of more than 750kW put into operation until August 2014, more than 500kW until 2016, more than 100 after 2016, will not be eligible for a feed-in tariff, but they are eligible for a market premium.
Goal/Aim:
Increase the share of renewable energy in electricity production.
